Radha Ashtami, also known as Radha Jayanti, is celebrated to observe the birth of Goddess Radha, the consort of Lord Krishna. It is celebrated every year on Ashtami tithi of Shukla Paksha of Bhadrapada month. This year, Radha Ashtami 2018 will be celebrated on September 17. It is the birth anniversary of Goddess Radha. It is celebrated after 15 days of Lord Krishna birth, i.e Janmashtami. Madhyana Kaal is considered the most auspicious time to celebrate Radha Ashtami.
कृष्ण जन्माष्टमी के दिन जिस तरह भगवान श्री कृष्ण के जन्म का जश्न मनाया जाता है, ठीक उसी प्रकार राधाष्टमी के दिन श्री राधाजी के जन्मोत्सव को भी हर्षोल्लास के साथ मनाया जाता है| ऐसा कहा जाता है कि जो राधा अष्टमी का व्रत नहीं रखता, उसे जन्माष्टमी व्रत का फल नहीं मिलता।
The birth anniversary is most vividly celebrated in the Brij region. International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKON) temples celebrate Radha Ashtami with utmost devotion and zeal. The celebration is grander in Mathura, Vrindavan, Barsana.
Birth Story of Radha Rani | राधा रानी जन्म कथा
Goddess Radha was born in Barsana (presently in Uttar Pradesh state) to Vrishbhanu (वृषभानु) Gurjar and Kirti Devi. Vrishbhanu was King Suchandra in his previous life and had acquired a boon from a Brahma Ji that in Dwapar Yug, the avatar of Goddess Lakshmi will be born to him as his daughter. It is believed that Goddess Radha is the avatar of Goddess Lakshmi.
पद्मपुराण में राधाजी को राजा वृषभानु की संतान बताया गया। जब राजा यज्ञ के लिए भूमि की सफाई कर रहे थे तब भूमि से कन्या के रुप में राधा मिली थी। राजा ने इस कन्या को अपनी पुत्री मानकर इसका लालन-पालन किया।
कहा जाता है कि राधा भगवान श्रीकृष्ण से साढ़े ग्यारह माह बड़ी थीं। भाद्रपद शुक्ल नवमी को जब गोकुल में नंदबाबा के यहां भगवान कृष्ण का जन्मोत्सव मनाया जा रहा था तब रानी कीर्ति राधा को लेकर वहां गई। उस समय कान्हा पालना झूल रहे थे और गोद में बैठी राधा ने पहली बार अपने आराध्य के दर्शन किए थे।
एक अन्य कथा के अनुसार जब भगवान विष्णु कृष्ण अवतार में जन्म लिया था तब उनके अन्य सदस्य भी पृथ्वी पर जन्म लिया था। विष्णु जी की पत्नी लक्ष्मी जी, राधा के रुप में पृथ्वी पर आई थी।
She is the eternal lover-consort of Lord Krishna. Radha is the greatest epitome of hearty devotion and undying love. Having a fervent attachment to Lord Krishna, Radha spent the entirety of her life being a devotee of Lord Krishna.

Radha Ashtami Rituals | राधाष्टमी पूजन
On the day of Radha Ashtami, devotees spend the day worshipping Goddess Radha. Some devotees also observe a fast for this occasion to show their devotion to Goddess Radha. Various bhajans and songs are sung about the tales and devotion of Goddess Radha. Prayers are offered to Radha along with Lord Krishna.
- राधाष्टमी के दिन प्रात: काल उठकर घर की साफ-सफाई, स्नान आदि करके शुद्ध मन से व्रत का संकल्प करना चाहिए।
- सबसे पहले राधा जी को पंचामृत ‘Panchamrit’ से स्नान कराएं और उसके बाद उनका श्रृंगार करें।
- An Abhishek is performed at Madhyana Kall (noon) since it is considered the most auspicious time.
- इसके बाद राधा रानी की मूर्ति को स्थापित करें, फिर राधा जी और भगवान श्रीकृष्ण की पूजा कर धूप, दीप, फल, फूल आदि से चढाना चाहिए। The idol is then decorated with new, vibrant clothes and garlands of beautiful fresh flowers. Dhoop, Shringaar items are offered by devotees as a part of their prayers.
- राधा रानी और भगवान श्रीकृष्ण की पूजा अर्चना करने के पश्चात् अंत में भोग चढाना चाहिए।
- संध्या आरती करने के बाद फलाहार करना चाहिए। Radhaji’s aarti is sung and the prasad is distributed among devotees.
- Goddess Radha has many names, and hence, devotees recite different names of Goddess Radha and also chant the ‘Radha Gayatri Mantra’ which is as follows :
ॐ वृषभानुजायै विद्महे क्रष्णप्रियायै धीमहि! तन्नो राधिका प्रचोदयात!
‘ॐ रां राधिकायै नम:’ इति मूलमंत्र:!
In the birth palace of Goddess Radha – Barsana, taking a bath in the holy Radha Kund is not allowed. But on the day of Radha Ashtami, the devotees wait till midnight to take a dip in the holy Radha Kund and to seek her grace. Thousands of devotees reach this place to take a holy bath so as to purify their soul and mind.

राधाष्टमी महत्व | Significance of Radha Ashtami
Just like the celebration of Janmashtami, Radha Ashtami is also celebrated with great devotion. The worship of Lord Krishna is incomplete without worshipping Goddess Radha. The birth anniversary of Goddess Radha holds a great significance for the devotees of Lord Krishna, especially in Brij, Mathura, Barsana. Also, the followers of Gaudiya Vaishnavism keep fast on this auspicious day.
Also, the followers of the Nimbarka sampradaya have a great importance of this holy birth anniversary when they ask Goddess Radha to bless them by favours, in turn, to acquire Lord Krishna Blessings.
- वेदों, पुराणों और शास्त्रों में राधाजी को कृष्ण वल्लभा कहकर गुणगान किया गया है।
- राधा जी का जाप और स्मरण करने से मोक्ष की प्राप्ति होती है।
- राधा अष्टमी का व्रत करने से इंसान की हर मनोकामना पूरी होती है।
- राधाष्टमी की कथा सुनने मात्र से व्रती और भक्त सुख, धन और सर्वगुण सम्पन्न बनता है।
- राधा की पूजा किये बिना श्रीकृष्ण की पूजा अधूरी मानी जाती है।
- मथुरा, वृन्दावन, बरसाना, रावल और मांट के राधा रानी मंदिरों में इस दिन को त्यौहार के रूप में मानते है।
Radha Ashtami also holds a great importance for the devotees from Himachal Pradesh. It is greatly significant for the pilgrimage to Manimahesh Lake. This practice is called as Manimahesh Yatra where the devotees carry holy chaari (stick) on their shoulders barefooted. Radha Ashtami embarks the starting of Manimahesh Yatra.

राधा अष्टमी का व्रत कैसे करें?
ऐसी मान्यता है कि इस व्रत को करने से घर में सुख शांति बनी रहती है। यह व्रत खासतौर पर पति और बेटे के लंबी उम्र के लिए और परिवार की खुशहाली एवं संतान सुख के लिए किया जाता है। इस दिन महिलाएं घर की खुशहाली का संकल्प लेती हैं और लक्ष्मी जी (राधा कृष्ण की ) की पूजा करती हैं। राधा अष्टमी का व्रत विधि –
- सबसे पहले सुबह जल्दी उठकर स्नानादि से निवृत्त हो जाएं।
- इसके बाद मंडप के नीचे मंडल बनाकर उसके मध्यभाग यानि बीच में मिट्टी या तांबे का कलश स्थापित करें।
- कलश पर तांबे का पात्र रखें।
- अब इस पात्र पर वस्त्राभूषण से सुसज्जित राधाजी की सोने (संभव हो तो) की प्रतिमा स्थापित करें।
- फिर राधा जी का षोडशोपचार से पूजन करें।
- ध्यान रहे कि पूजा का समय ठीक मध्याह्न का होना चाहिए।
- पूजन के बाद पूरा दिन उपवास करें और एक समय भोजन करें।
- दूसरे दिन श्रद्धानुसार सुहागिन स्त्रियों और ब्राह्मणों को भोजन कराएं और उन्हें दक्षिणा दें।
राधा अष्टमी व्रत का उद्यापन कैसे करें?
इस व्रत का उद्यापन करते समय आखिरी दिन एक सूप लेते हैं और उसमें 16 श्रृंगार की चीजें रखी जाती हैं और उसे दूसरे सूप से ढंककर 16 दिए जलाए जाते हैं। व्रत के बाद चन्द्रमा भगवान को अर्घ्य देते हैं और फिर लक्ष्मी जी को अपने घर में वास करने का आमंत्रण दिया जाता है साथ ही श्रृंगार का सामान किसी ज़रूरतमंद को दान कर दिया जाता है।
इस व्रत के दौरान आस पास के लोगों को आमंत्रित करके घर में कथा पाठ भी कराया जाता है। ऐसी मान्यता है कि 16 बार कथा पाठ करवाना ज्यादा शुभ होता है।
It is mentioned in the Hindu scriptures, the observer of the Radha Ashtami vrat will be blessed with a prosperous and happy life. It is believed that after observing the Radha Ashtami fast and worshipping Goddess Durga, the person will be graced by Goddess Radha’s blessings. Their minds will be cleared from negativities and will attain spiritual bliss.

Goddess Radha is considered the symbol of ardent devotion. If Lord Krishna is the life, then Radha is his soul. That’s why It is believed “Atma Tu Radhika Tatsya” –Radha, you are his soul. It is known that Radha and Krishna exist together and are referred as ‘Radhakrishna’. The birth anniversary fills the devotees heart with great enthusiasm by devoting their soul in the service of God and being a great devotee without any selfless greed just as Goddess Radha.
