The Indian Institute of Technology Jodhpur (IIT Jodhpur) will be organizing its sixth convocation this Sunday, December 6 virtually, using Artificial Intelligence (AI). The IIT Jodhpur 06th Convocation event will be held in mixed reality mode using AI technique at the Lecture Hall building of the Institute where the graduates will be awarded their degree.
The students of IIT Jodhpur would be receiving their degrees in virtual mode and would experience the convocation proceedings in an immersive 360-degree live stream online.
In this convocation, a total of 232 students, including 117 in B.Tech, 51 M.Sc, 33 M.Tech, and 31 Ph.D. students, who have completed their degree in the year 2020 will be awarded their degrees by the institute. The medals and the certificates to the academically outstanding students will be awarded through their computer-generated 3D avatar.
The Chief Guest for this momentous occasion will be Professor Geoffrey E. Hinton, popularly known as the ‘Godfather of Deep Learning’, will attend the ceremony virtually from Toronto. Geoffrey Hinton, one of the pioneers of “Deep Learning” technology that triggered today’s AI revolution and recipient of the Turing Award (which is equivalent to the Noble prize in Computer Science) in the year 2018. Professor Hinton will be delivering the Convocation Address virtually from Toronto, Canada.
Spokesperson of the institute, Amardeep Sharma, said the newly-established School of Artificial Intelligence and Data Science (AODE) of the institute will also be inaugurated on the occasion by Hinton and R Chidambaram, Chairman (Board of Governor), virtually.

South Korean tech giant Samsung last Friday inaugurated its Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality (AR-VR) innovation lab at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Jodhpur. The company has so far set up six Samsung Innovation Labs in IIT-Delhi, IIT-Kanpur, IIT-Hyderabad, IIT-Kharagpur, IIT-Roorkee, and IIT-Guwahati as part of its ‘Samsung Digital Academy’ program since 2017.
