Thousands of miles away from the massive protests in India against Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s movie ‘Padmaavat‘, the film found support from Americans. The popular Ghoomar song featuring film’s leading lady Deepika Padukone in Marwari song has become so famous that the cheerleaders during an NBA match were seen grooving on this song.
Sanjay Leela Bhansali directed Padmaavat might have faced the backlash in India by some communities and group, who protested against the movie but it has still reached the mass after being released on January 25, 2018. Not even that, the famous Ghoomar song from the movie has become so popular that the cheerleaders during an NBA match between Charlotte Hornets and Miami Heat in the United States of America, on January 28, were seen dancing on this song.
Controversy or not, no one can resist a catchy Bollywood tune. Not even the cheerleaders at this National Basketball Association (NBA) game. Padmaavat’s ‘Ghoomar’ song featuring film’s leading lady Deepika Padukone has surely become a rage worldwide. Deepika Padukone’s “Padmaavat” had a great opening in the US and now the film’s song “Ghoomar” has also become a rage.
A group of cheerleaders performed on the song during the halftime show at an NBA match between the Charlotte Hornets and Miami Heat teams on January 28. The spectators witnessed this moment during the match too, enjoyed the song and were in full flow with whistles and clapping.
The video of the dance sequence was posted by the NBA on Facebook and its viewership has clocked more than 2 million. It has been shared more than 6,600 times on the social networking site. In the video, cheerleaders, in traditional Indian dresses – flowing lilac skirts and dupattas, can be seen dancing on the popular song much to the delight of fans, who can be heard whistling and applauding in the stadium.

The cheerleaders used the same choreography as in the film. And the crowd loved it, proving once again that Bollywood can conquer the world if only it tries hard enough.
Of course, the protests and bans have done Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s movie Padmaavat little harm commercially – it raked in over Rs 100 crore in its opening weekend. And it was popular enough in other countries – including the US and Canada – for its song Ghoomar.

On the other hand, earlier in India, a fringe group had warned Samajwadi Party leader Mulayam Singh Yadav’s daughter-in-law Aparna Yadav for dancing on the same song. Ironically when the video of Mulayam Singh Yadav’s daughter-in-law dancing to the song in a Sangeet function in Lucknow went viral, it was met with severe backlash from fringe groups.
A video went viral over the internet in November last year in which Aparna was seen dancing to Ghoomar as a part of a sangeet performance of her brother at a five-star hotel in Lucknow, it was met with severe backlash from fringe groups which has caught the attention.

After watching the video the fringe group had warned them had said that it is “shameful if someone is dancing to such controversial tunes”. They have even warned them saying, “You are trying to upset us with this act, it will be better if you do not do it.”
The ‘Ghoomar’ song, featuring actor Deepika Padukone and Shahid Kapoor, is part of ‘Padmaavat’ movie, which was released in India on January 25. The song had its own share of controversy, with many expressing outrages over Deepika’s bare midriff in the sequence, which was later covered with the help of CGI.
In the Bay Area of San Fransisco, according to film industry analyst Komal Nahta, a family hired an entire auditorium for a screening of the film – and all the women were asked to dress as Padmavati!
Meanwhile, Malaysia’s National Film Censorship Board (LPF) has barred the film from getting released in the country, saying that the storyline of the movie is of great concern as “Malaysia is a Muslim-majority country”, reports variety.com.
Film’s director Sanjay Leela Bhansali, nonetheless, called the protest obnoxious and illogical while stating that the audience’s response to the movie is the answer to the protestors.
“It is just an answer to the anguish that we all went through including me, the actors and the technicians. All of us were not being heard even after repeatedly saying that there is nothing wrong in the film. I realised that the best way of going ahead and fighting this is to make the film that is in my mind,” Bhansali told PTI in an interview.
