A day to celebrate with Jokes, harmless pranks, hoaxes, foolish fun and just that with zero guilt! Every year in the month of April the 1st day is celebrated as April Fool’s Day or Clowns day. We enjoy the day by celebrating it and make pranks with our friends and known. So, why 1st April is celebrated or famously known as April fool’s day, here are some reasons in the history.
In ancient Europe, the New Year was celebrated on 1st April every year. A new calendar was formed and introduced by Pope Gregory XIII in 1582, and according to that calendar, New Year’s Day is to be celebrated on 1st January. Most of the Romans accepted this new calendar, but many people refuse to accept and continue to celebrate the New Year on 1st April.
In Europe, most of the people did not accept this new calendar whereas even most of the people did not have any information about the same. Because of this, the people who have accepted the new calendar started making the fun of the people who have not accepted the new calendar. And then the people who have not accepted the new calendar they started to be mocked by others.
Since then, it is believed that April fool’s day caught the practice. And the trend of April Fool’s Day has increased. This calendar was first accepted by France and April 1 is considered to lay in the change of calendar from the Julian to the Gregorian one.

A book ‘Canterbury Tales‘ written in 1392, may contain the first recorded association between April 1 and foolishness, although this claim is controversial. According to a story from British author Chaucer’s book Canterbury Tales, the announcement of King Annie engagement to King Richard II of England and anniversary of Bohemia was made on March 32, because of this news people have accepted that as truth and became stupid. Since then, on March 32 “i.e. April 01, is celebrated as April Fool Day.
Other instances link April Fools’ Day to ancient Roman festival Hilaria, where people would dress up in disguises and enjoy the spring.
In Europe, on the 1st April, every owner played the role of a servant and servant used to play the role of boss. The owner who had become a servant for a day had to fulfil his servant’s (who is acting as an owner) every order. The owner used to make food for the servant and washed his clothes, and all the other tasks he had given him politely.
All over the world, the April Fool day is enjoyed. Some people fool people by giving strange things and listening to tales.
In 1957, BBC published fake news about Swiss spaghetti tree in their program panorama, that the farmers of Switzerland are cultivating spaghettis they also released a video of this which showed that they are breaking the spaghetti from the tree many people called the BBC to know how to cultivate it by believing it.
In 1976 by humorist Larry Wilde, mentioned the 1st April for public awareness of humour’s health benefits. Fun and Laughter reduces stress, pain, relax muscles, boost morale, strengthen the immune system, increase blood circulation, and increase the positive energy in one’s life.

In India, there have been numerous references to April Fools’ Day in cinema and popular literature and people look for ways and pranks to fool their friends, colleagues and neighbours. Once the target victim falls for the prank, the prankster shouts out loud “April fool”! Once caught in the trap, the person earns the ‘fool’s tag’, the one he/she cannot proudly flaunt!
One of the most popular songs on April Fool’s Day is Mohammed Rafi’s ‘April fool banaya toh unko gussa aaya’! As you croon it, plan your pranks, Just remember that the joke is just a joke until it does not harm anyone – beware!
