Mythological Stories Behind Raksha Bandhan Celebration

The origin of Raksha Bandhan dates back to centuries and there are many mythological stories behind its celebration. The origin of the festival can be traced to as far back as the Pouranik times. The most famous mythological story is about a war between the Gods and the Demons. The Gods lead by Indradev were on the verge of defeat. So, Indradev approached his Guru Brihaspati and sought his help. On Shravan Poornima after Guru Brihaspati’s advice, Sachi (Indradev’s wife) tied the thread on his wrist and Gods won the battle.

Other mythological story talks about the bond between Lord Yama and his sister the Yamuna who fastened a sacred thread on Yama’s wrist and blessed immortality to him. Since then Yama promised that whoever gets a rakhi tied by his sister will live long.

There are also several other mythological stories about the origin as those of Krishna-Draupadi, Goddess Lakshmi-Bali etc.

Raksha Bandhan Pooja Vidhi

On the day of Raksha Bandhan, several preparations and arrangements are made before the main puja. Both brothers and sisters observe fast before puja. After having the bath, a plate commonly known as Thaali is decorated with flowers, Roli, Akshat, Diya, Sweets, Water Kalash and Rakhi.

A rakhi is a colourful thread decorated with various things such as artificial flowers, pearls, gems etc. A particular time i.e. Muhurat is considered to start the rituals of Raksha Bandhan. The sister puts a tilak on the brother’s forehead and adorns his wrist with the beautiful rakhi. By doing this, she wishes God to give her brother a long and prosperous life whereas the brother promises to stand by the side of his sister during the tough times and to protect her from all ills and evils.

Then the sister does aarti of her brother while enchanting some mantras and offers him sweets. The brother in return presents her with gifts as a token of love. Only after all the mentioned rituals are performed, they have their meal.

Raksha Bandhan 2018:
