Modi Cabinet 2.0: Prime Minister Narendra Damodar Das Modi and his Council of Ministers took an oath to the office on Thursday, May 30, 2019. The 17th Lok Sabha Union Cabinet includes 24 cabinet ministers, 9 ministers of state with independent charge and 24 ministers of state took an oath to the office on Yesterday May 30, 2019.

The first-time Ministers like Amit Shah, S Jaishankar along with 23 other ministers including Rajnath Singh, Nitin Gadkari, Nirmala Sitharaman and Smriti Irani also took oath as Union ministers. Today, On May 31, as advised by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the President of India, Mr Ram Kovind, has directed the allocation of portfolios among the members of the Union Council of Ministers.


Some of the key ministers in the previous Modi Government (Modi Cabinet 1.0), including Sushma Swaraj, Uma Bharti, Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore and Maneka Gandhi, are not a part of the new council of ministers. Arun Jaitley, former finance minister in Modi cabinet 1.0 had written earlier to PM Modi for not willing to be a part of the new government (Modi Cabinet 2.0) citing health reasons.

As per the Constitution, the total number of Union ministers, including the Prime Minister shall not exceed 15 per cent of the total number of Lok Sabha members. Prime Minister Narendra Modi can have as many as 80 ministers in the 543-member Lok Sabha. With current appointments, the total number of Union ministers in 17th Lok Sabha is 57.
